Ceramic Lapping & Polishing

Lapping is when a loose abrasive is used between two surfaces that rub together; as these surfaces move past each other, the ceramic component is slowly abraded away until a highly smooth surface finish is achieved. Our customers like to use lapping when it is difficult or impossible to achieve a desired surface finish or flatness.

When lapping there are several factors to take into consideration with regard to the type of abrasive and material being lapped. Depending on the lapping technique, different amounts of material removal rates, surface finish, and the parts ability to keep its shape.

Polishing is essentially very similar to lapping, except at a much finer scale. No matter what the desired finish, Precision Ceramics has the expertise to help guide our customers to achieve their desired result.
